- Eat Well, Live Well
By Catherine Sebastian, MS, RD, CDN
Memorial Day is here, the kickoff of summer fun! For those living in colder areas of the country, you have been counting down the days to summer for quite some time now.
Now it is officially barbecue season, beach season, camping season – basically any fun you can have outdoors season! With the warmer weather and less hectic schedules, there are more opportunities for hanging out with friends and families, whether at planned events or at more spontaneous get-togethers. That also means more food will be around, as well as more opportunities to snack! Keeping mindful and busy this summer season can help you enjoy these moments while keeping your wellness goals in mind.
Here are some of my favorite healthy habits that you can practice all summer long:
- When going to a friend’s house or family gathering bring your own healthy dish. If you are following a specific diet or have dietary restrictions, there may not always be an option for you to eat. You do not have to go off track every time you are out. By bringing a healthy dish that you know has the right ingredients – then you can enjoy eating with everyone else without having to worry.
- Focus on veggies! Try making a vegetarian dish for the Memorial Day Bash. Bringing a vegetable-focused dish will help offset some of the more indulgent, or meat-heavy offerings at the barbecue. Libby’s® Canned Vegetables can help you make a fantastic dish that is easy to prep and low cost.
- Stay hydrated! When you are out enjoying the activities all weekend long in the hot sun, your body loses water quickly. You want to make sure you are staying hydrated. To jazz up your typical old water, you can even throw some of drained Libby’s® Canned Fruit into your water bottle to make it a refresher, almost like a juice! It still counts towards your hydration goal!
- Get moving! The kick off to summer is something to celebrate! This weekend enjoy an activity you love with friends and family! Play in a pickup softball game, shoot some hoops, go for a swim, even a stroll in the park – there so many ways to get moving and that heart rate up while enjoying the more seasonable weather.
