Timeline

  • 1868

    The company was founded as Libby, McNeill & Libby in Chicago, Illinois, by brothers Arthur and Charles Libby, and their brother-in-law and business partner, Archibald McNeill. The business began with a canned meat product, corned beef.  

  • 1875

    Libby’s was the first to mechanically compress meat into cans, the first to invent a customer friendly tapered tin can, and the first to employ therecently invented refrigerated train car, which allowed fresh meat to be shipped hundreds of miles without compromising its quality

  • 1904

    In order to support the urbanization and growing demand for a broader set of products, Libby, McNeil & Libby expanded operations and began marketing canned sauerkraut and condiments.

  • 1907

    Libby, McNeill & Libby started its first fruit cannery in Sunnyvale, California, expending its portfolio well beyond meats and condiments to a large variety of fruits, vegetables and juices.

  • 1971

    The famous Libby’s jingle was born, written by Martin Rubenstein, and was used in a number of TV commercials. Today, it remains one of the most classic jingles in advertising history.

  • 1982

    Seneca Foods Corporation obtained the rights to license Libby’s canned fruits and vegetables and frozen vegetables, which ushered in a new era of commitment to the American family.

  • 1983

    Libby’s was the first to offer a healthful line of no-salt vegetables under our Naturals pack label.

  • 1991

    Libby’s was the first in its industry to introduce Jumbo-Can™ Vegetables, a 29oz. can option for some of our most popular vegetable products.

  • 2006

    Seneca Foods Corporation acquired the rights to Libby’s delicious canned fruits with the acquisition of Signature Fruit.

  • 2006

    Seneca Foods Corporation acquired the rights to Libby’s deciduous canned fruits with the acquisition of Signature Fruit.

  • 2013

    Libby’s became the first major brand to convert to BPA-free cans.

  • 2013

    Libby’s introduced the first
    4 oz. Vegetable Cups on the market in five different varieties: Cut Green Beans,
    Diced Carrots, Peas & Carrots, Sweet Peas and Sweet Corn.

    Libby’s has proven itself time and time again as one of the world’s most trusted and storied brands. And that famous reputation for innovation continues into the 21st century with new products for today’s on-the-go consumer, such as convenient Vegetable Pouches.
